Every year, millions of people around the world gather in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
There are plenty of ways to get involved besides wearing something pink. Many of your favorite retailers support breast cancer awareness by releasing limited-edition products and collections, with proceeds from sales donated to charities. And, of course, there are the many organizations and charities around Australia and the world that work tirelessly all year round to raise awareness of breast cancer, investing in treatment, education, and research.
Founded in 1961, the Cancer Council of Australia is one of the biggest cancer charities in the world, and is the largest non-government source of cancer research funding in the country. It is a national organization that funds cancer research, supports prevention efforts, and provides support to survivors all over Australia.
The Cancer Council provides support groups for cancer patients and survivors, funds a free helpline, provides cancer nurses for at-home care, as well as financial assistance to those in need. Its prevention efforts include national anti-smoking campaigns, cancer screening awareness, and providing sunscreen and protective clothing for melanoma prevention.
The Breast Cancer Treatment Project aims to gather and analyze data on the treatment and outcomes for people with breast cancer, to improve breast cancer treatment and survival.
Cancer Australia is run by the Australian government, aiming to reduce the impact of cancer on the community. It works with a wide range of charities and organizations dedicated to improving access to treatment, reducing stigmas surrounding cancer, helping support those who have had cancer, and educating the community.
The McGrath Foundation is based in Australia and funds McGrath Breast Care Nurses. These nurses support individuals facing breast cancer and their families, whether physical, psychological, or emotional support.
National Breast Cancer Foundation
The National Breast Cancer Foundation is a nonprofit organization run entirely on community donations. It aims to stop deaths caused by breast cancer by identifying and funding research to detect tumors earlier and improve treatment outcomes.
